Frequently asked questions
Profit = proceeds − cost. Cost is buy price × quantity plus the buy fee; proceeds are sell price × quantity minus the sell fee. Fees on both sides reduce your net result.
Yes. At 1% each side, fees consume 2% of turnover before any price move — enough to turn a small gain into a loss on tight trades. Always include them.
This calculator uses the prices you enter. On pages that show a current price, the live value is fetched client-side with a cached fallback, but the maths always uses your inputs.
No — it shows pre-tax profit. In India, gains on crypto (VDAs) are taxed at a flat 30% plus 1% TDS on transfers. Use the crypto tax calculator for the after-tax figure.
"Price went up 33%" isn't the same as "I made 33%"
Buy 0.5 BTC at $30,000, sell at $40,000 — a 33% price move — with a 1% fee on each leg of the trade, and the actual return comes to 30.7%, not 33%. The buy fee (30,000 × 0.5 × 0.01 = $150) pushes total cost to $15,150; the sell fee (40,000 × 0.5 × 0.01 = $200) trims total proceeds to $19,800. Net profit is $4,650 — real money, just less than the naive price-difference math would suggest, purely because fees eat into both sides of the trade before the return is even calculated.
Why fees matter more than they look like they should
A 1% fee on the way in and 1% on the way out sounds negligible individually, but together they skim 2% off turnover before price movement even enters the picture — enough to turn a genuinely small gain into a net loss on a tight trade. This calculator deliberately nets both fees out rather than reporting a headline price-difference figure, because that's the only way to know whether a trade actually paid off.
What this number is, and what it deliberately isn't
Enter buy price, sell price, quantity and the fee on each side, and the result is net profit, percentage return, total cost and total proceeds — reproducible from whatever inputs you provide, whether that's Bitcoin or any other coin in any currency. Where a page shows a live market price, that figure comes from a client-side API call with a cached fallback, but the calculation itself always runs on the numbers you actually enter, not a background price feed.
This figure is pre-tax. For Indian investors specifically, the crypto tax calculator applies the 30% VDA tax and 1% TDS on top — the pre-tax profit shown here is meaningfully larger than what actually lands in your account once both apply, so treat this as a starting point rather than a take-home figure.
