Frequently asked questions

Average the parents’ heights, then add 6.5 cm for a boy or subtract 6.5 cm for a girl. The result is the estimated adult height.

It is a rough estimate. Actual adult height usually falls within about ±8.5 cm of the figure, which is why a range is shown alongside the single number.

Nutrition, sleep, general health, hormones and overall environment all play a part, so genetics set a range rather than an exact destiny.

No — this estimates final adult height only. For tracking growth at a given age, your paediatrician uses growth charts and percentiles.

Same two parents, 13 cm apart — depending only on the child's sex

Average a mother at 160 cm and a father at 175 cm: (160 + 175) ÷ 2 = 167.5 cm. For a boy, this calculator adds 6.5 cm to that average, predicting an adult height of 174 cm, likely landing somewhere between 165.5 and 182.5 cm. For a girl with the exact same parents, it subtracts 6.5 cm instead, predicting 161 cm, likely between 152.5 and 169.5 cm. That 13 cm gap between the boy and girl estimates comes from identical parental heights — it's entirely the formula's built-in adjustment for the average adult height difference between men and women.

Why the estimate always comes with a ±8.5 cm range attached

This calculator uses the mid-parental height method: average the two parents' heights, then adjust by 6.5 cm up or down depending on the child's sex. Genetics sets a range, not a fixed destination, which is why the tool deliberately surfaces a likely band around the central number rather than presenting one falsely precise figure — real outcomes for children of identical parents genuinely spread across roughly 17 cm of that range.

What this number can and can't tell you

Genetics is only part of the story: nutrition, sleep quality, general health, hormones and overall environment through childhood and adolescence all shape where a child actually lands, sometimes moving them within the predicted band, occasionally beyond it. This tool also only projects final adult height — it says nothing about height at any specific age along the way, which is a job for your paediatrician's growth charts and percentiles, built to compare a child against population norms for their exact current age rather than project decades forward. Treat the number here as an informed glimpse, not a target to hold a child to.

This is an estimate based on standard assumptions, not medical advice. Pregnancy dating and growth can vary — consult your doctor for personalised assessment, especially if cycles are irregular.
