"20% + 10% off" is not 30% off — it's 28%
A ₹1,000 item with a single 20% discount comes to ₹800, saving ₹200 — straightforward enough. Stack a second 10% discount on top, and it's easy to assume 30% off in total. It isn't: the calculator applies that second discount to the already-reduced ₹800, not the original ₹1,000, landing on ₹720 — a total saving of ₹280, an effective discount of 28%, two full points short of the naive addition.
Why stacked discounts multiply rather than add
Each discount in a stack applies to whatever price survived the previous one, not to the original price — which is exactly why 20% followed by 10% isn't 30% off. The second discount is a smaller absolute rupee amount than it would be applied to the full original price, because it's calculated on an already-shrunk base. The gap between "sounds like" and "actually is" widens the more discounts get stacked, which is precisely how a retailer can advertise "20% + 10% + 5% off" while charging more than a flat 35% discount would.
What "effective discount" actually gives you
Beyond the final price and total savings, this calculator converts any combination of stacked discounts into a single effective percentage — the flat discount that would have produced the identical final price.
