Why the split is even, and when it genuinely isn't fair
Every diner here covers an equal share of both the bill and the tip, regardless of what they individually ordered — the calculation assumes an even split by design. That's fair when everyone ordered roughly similarly, but not when orders varied sharply in price: in that case, the fairer approach is settling each person's individual items first, then applying the same tip percentage to each person's own share separately.
