"About six years" isn't what a visa form wants to see
Joining on 15 January 2020 and leaving on 15 January 2026 — exactly six calendar years later, to the day — this calculator returns a clean 6 years, 0 months, 0 days, or 72 months total. Shift the exit date away from that exact anniversary and the breakdown adjusts precisely: leave a few weeks earlier and a handful of days trims off the count, leave a few months later and whole months get added before the day count restarts from zero. That's the level of precision job applications, visa forms and appraisal documents actually expect — not a rounded-off "about six years."
Why the date math has to be calendar-correct, not approximate
Leap years and unequal month lengths break a naive "days ÷ 30" estimate in ways that compound the longer a stint runs — a tenure spanning a leap-year February would throw off that kind of shortcut by a day it never should have lost. This calculator instead works from actual calendar dates, which is what keeps a multi-year gap accurate down to the day rather than approximately right.
Leave the end date blank, or set it precisely
Leaving the end date blank measures straight through to today, which is the right setting for updating a résumé or filling out a live application. For a completed role, use your actual relieving date — the day your notice period ended — rather than your resignation date, since that's the date that defines the true end of your tenure with that employer. For total experience spanning several jobs, calculate each stint separately this way and add the months together, taking care not to double-count any period where two roles briefly overlapped.
