Divide the distance you travelled by the fuel you used. Covering 450 km on 30 litres gives 15 km/L.

Same efficiency, two numbers that move in opposite directions

450 km covered on 30 litres is 15 km/L — 450 ÷ 30. Flip the same efficiency around and it's 30 ÷ 450 × 100 = 6.67 litres per 100 km. Both describe the identical fuel efficiency, but they move in opposite directions: km/L is the figure Indian buyers are used to on brochures, where higher is better, while L/100km is the European convention, where *lower* is better — worth remembering the first time a spec sheet from a different region looks backward at a glance.

Why the brochure number is a starting point, not the real answer

Manufacturer mileage figures come from controlled test conditions that rarely survive contact with actual driving — city traffic, AC use, hard acceleration, under-inflated tyres and extra load all cut into real-world efficiency. The only way to know true efficiency is to measure it directly, which is exactly what this calculator turns into two clean numbers from nothing more than distance and fuel consumed.

The tank-full method, and what a sudden drop can tell you

Brim the tank, reset or note the trip meter, drive normally for a few hundred kilometres covering the usual mix of roads, then refill completely — trip distance divided by litres added at that second fill is genuine real-world mileage, almost always lower than the brochure number. Tracking it across a few tanks smooths out one-off variation into a stable average, and a sudden drop from that baseline is itself useful information: it can signal low tyre pressure, a clogged air filter, or an overdue service before the problem becomes obvious any other way.
